Report on a Game Franchise

The game franchise I am going to be doing a report on is the Rayman series however I am mainly going to be focusing on first ever ray man and how different it is to the most recent Rayman game out of the series.
I’ve used different research methods to help gather the information i needed. Firstly i started off doing some secondary research by using the internet and images which i have sourced all the websites I have used etc. in the 'link' sections.
Afterwards I decided to compare both games together to see which game meets there target audience etc. I have also inserted a survey i created then collected the responses for my primary and quantitative research.

Over view of Rayman (1995)

Introduction
The first ever game in the Rayman series was released in 1995 with the basic title 'Rayman .' This was available on platforms such as the play station and game boy. Rayman  is an adventure/action, side scrolling platform game. A platform game is a game that is basic 2D controls and has different obstetrical such as solid platforms which the player has to jump pass on different portions in the game, you can simply see this in the video above.
The game starts off with a basic loading screen which then loads on to the saving screen. The saving screen is simple and allows up to three saves which you can personalize with a name of three letters. you are given the option to delete a saved game and make a new game or be able to copy and paste a saved game into another section for example If you wanted to copy the first saved game into the second section you are able too. I personally like this feature because it allows the player to either start new or have a spare game of a previous saved game giving it a 'backup' game effect. Once you have decided to start a new game a screen appears which shows some basic controls for example if you hit the 'x' button on the PlayStation controller then ray man will jump and if you hit the square button then ray man will punch etc. At the bottom of this screen it gives you the option to be able to adjust the sound FX or the music volume. Once the player is happy with the controls and the volume they can press start and the game will introduce Rayman by a basic video introduction. In this video it basically shows how a magician bought him to a valley somewhere in a place called glade of dreams so he can help save all the Electoons and the great protoons. Rayman has to help recapture all the Electoons and great Protoons to bring happiness and order back to the worlds. You have to find and free 6 of the Electoons per level which will then be kept in a medallion throughout the level.

World, Levels & Maps

The game starts off by dropping Rayman onto a simple map which usually lets Rayman move in two different directions to an available path (left or right) of the map and choose the available levels.

The levels in Rayman 1995 have quite basic, fun music however the background detail is extremely well done. The backgrounds in each world are very different and very imaginative for example my favourite backgrounds throughout all the worlds is art land, band land and the candy land world.

The art world is one of my favorites because of how colorful and detailed the levels are. It’s fun and even though there is quite alot of tough enemies unlike in the first world which is just basic enemies. This worlds creates an fun, happy but still have an adventures effect.

The next world I thought had quite a lot of detail within the levels is the 'candy land' level. This level is full of chocolate, toffees, lollies etc. It’s a bit unusual but it does help to attract Rayman original target audience which was 15 and over. Even though they have such a wide target audience the game was mostly played by people in their 20s.
This is why i think the candy land level does amazingly well for their target audience because the colour, fun and detail to the characters and background etc. will be eye catching towards the younger age of the target audience. To unlock candy land you have to collect medallions full of Electoons from 5 different worlds.

My most favourite is the 'band land' level. This level is full of instruments which are full of colour. It also has a catchy rhythm to the background sound of this level. Everything in this background has some sort of detail put into it and each instrument have great effect to the game play within the level for example on the website 'http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BandLand' it explains how the 'levels make you "face the music" in a more literal fashion. They're made of musical instruments, sheet music, or (somehow) music itself, often of giant scale. You might get blasted out of a huge trumpet, walk gingerly along a giant keyboard, or slide down a musical score.'  And that is exactly what this level does, this level is so entertaining and you do admire every detail which is put into this level.

There are a lot more worlds available in this particular Rayman game for instance there is the blue mountain world which is more landscape levels, The dream forest which is a jungle based around water and picture city which lets Rayman takes pictures throughout the levels. Although the levels are quite short they are always full of enemies/features for example throughout most of the levels in ray man there are different weather changes for example in some levels it is snowing but in a different level it might be sunny or cloudy.

This gives each level its own personalization.

Another feature that makes each level unique is that the levels get harder as they get on for instance level one was very basic, there was easy platforms to jump on and an enemy which wasn't as threatening towards Rayman. However as the levels did go on they made each feature more difficult for example in one of the levels there is a solid platform shaped as a cloud, Rayman has to jump on each cloud to get past the round but some of the clouds can trick Rayman and not be a solid platform. This basically means that Rayman will fall through the fake solid platform and die.
Also some of the levels are more of a puzzle than an action/adventure type of level for instance in some levels in Rayman the objective is just to collect gems and collect the Electoons and great Protoons.

Movement, Power ups & Special Items.

Ray man already has the ability to do ordinary movements at the beginning of the game such as jumping, crawling and a movement called grimance. Grimance is Rayman only ability to defend himself, he does this by stretching out his mouth and doing a silly face which will frighten the most basic enemy which is called 'living stones'. To get more advanced movements he has to interact with a character called Betilla who is a fairy and a character within some of the levels. Betilla can give you many different movements and power ups however some are permanent, some are temporary and some are just a power up. Here is a list of some of some;

One of the first permanent moves is basically where Rayman is able to throw out his fist and hit an enemy to defeat them to make this do more damage than it usually does there is a power up called speed fist and golden fist. Speed fist allows Rayman fists to move faster while golden fist allows the punch to be twice as strong and powerful. However the speed fist and the golden fist are temporary and only last for a certain amount of time.

Another permanent move is hanging and grappling fists. Hanging allows Rayman to hang onto ledges while grappling fists allows Rayman to grab onto objects such as the flying rings.

Instead of having double jump Rayman has an ability to tie his hair up and fly/guide almost like an helicopter would do although Rayman can only permanently  guide with his hair e.g guide onto a platform which is to far for a single jump. He can also get a power up called super helicopter which allows Rayman to use his helicopter guide much longer so he can basically fly by using his hair.

If the helicopter hair isn’t good enough then Rayman last permanent move is defiantly essential. This allows Rayman to run. So it gives Rayman the ability to walk/run faster than he could which results in a longer and bigger jump however having the running movement does cancel out the grimace which means you can no longer use it but that doesn’t initially matter because grimance isn’t power enough for the different types of enemies while punching and running can help Rayman defense.
Other powers include having 'Life' which gives him a full health restore and an extra life although the power ‘ting’ also gives you an extra life if you collect 100 of the small blue bubbles. The power up powers also helps restore Rayman health however it doesn’t give him an extra life.  My favourite temporary power which i haven't already mentioned is either the magic seed or the shrinking power. The magic speed basically allows Rayman to grow a tree which he can climb and get onto hard to reach places. The shrinking power which allows Rayman to shrink if he touches an elf this is beneficial because Rayman can fit into small hard to reach places but if he get touched by an elf again he will restore back to his normal size.

Health and points mechanics
The amount of life’s Rayman does have left can be found in the top right corner of the screen. It basically has a picture/icon of Rayman face which is timed by how many lives he has left. For example in the picture below you can easily see how there is Rayman face then an 'x 06' this means that Rayman currently has 6 lives left. If Rayman dies he re starts the level again and then have 'x 05' however if Rayman has just been injured/hurt he will do a sound effect, jump back and reduce one of the golden balls bellow the life bar.  Once of all the golden balls have gone Rayman will lose another life. However there is power ups to help gain an extra life (explained in the power up section).

Basically on the opposite side of the health/life bar there is the score for the point. This is located on the top left of the screen and has an icon of the blue magic balls which you can find within levels. Once you have collected some blue balls the number next to the blue ball icon will increase for instance if you have collected 5 balls the icon would have the blue ball icon and then 'x05'. In this example picture Rayman has collected 40 balls.

 Characters/enemys

The main feature i noticed in this particular ray man game is that you are able to interact with the characters you come across in the level. You are able to talk to these characters and they will either give you a tip/hint or a special item. I like this feature because it gives ray man a bit of more of a story line when he interacts with different characters, Not just enemies this is because seeing different characters allows the player to understand what characters in the
Valley is like and each character has a purpose. For example the fairy wants to give Rayman power ups but also there are characters that are a threat to Rayman. An example of two bosses is firstly the Bzzt which is Rayman first boss. He looks like a giant mosquito who tries and attacks Rayman however once Rayman has defeated Bzzt they become friends and Rayman is able to fly on Bzzt in some of the levels.
Space mama is another boss but for a different world for instance space mamma is the boss of picture city while Bzzt is the boss off the world dream forest. Space mamma tricked Rayman into thinking she was an innocent big woman who cooks however when Rayman and space mamma is competing space mamma gets really aggressive and uses her roller pins has a weapon.
There are bosses for basically every world in the game and also side enemies who are based in the levels of the world to help defend their boss and stop Rayman getting past the levels.

One of Rayman main objective is to help save the Electoons and the Protoons.
The Electoons are small, friendly purple creatures who have been captured and put into cages and hid around levels. There is up to 6 to save in every level and the progress is saved in a golden medallion. If you collect all of the medallions it allows you to unlock features within the game for example if you collect five medallions from five different worlds it will unlock candy world.
When each level is finished Rayman will do a little victory wave and then the next level will begin.

Comparison to Rayman legends 2013

Introduction

The Rayman legend is an action/adventure game which was released in 2013 and is now on modern devices like PlayStation 4 and Xbox one.
Rayman begins with a start screen of three different buttons.  First one is the new game, second is continue and the final one is the options menu. Ray man legends only has one saved game unlike in the first ray man game where you get to have several saved games and options to either rename or move about your game into different saving slots.

The introduction to the game is quite similar to the first ray man game because Rayman is sent to save all the Teensies because ray man, Globox and the two Teensies was annoying the grannies so she sent bad characters to deal with them.
The main difference i noticed when i was comparing the legends and the original is at the begging of Rayman legends there isn’t a screen which shows the basic controls like there was in the first Rayman.

Levels & worlds
In the first Rayman all the levels are presented on a map however on the legendary Rayman. There is a hallway full of worlds (hero galley) which he can unlock for example altogether there is five worlds and the overall of 120 levels but there is one extra world which you can unlock by progressing through the game and collecting all the Teensies. The worlds and levels look like big pictures which Rayman can just jump through once the level/picture is unlocked. At the top of pictures is the amount of Teensies you need to collect. However it all depends on what type of level.

Rayman legends have basic platform levels such as jumping onto simple platforms and jumping on enemies while other levels include having boss battles, Challenges e.g. having to turn big wheels full of spikes. The challenging levels are usually the secret rooms based around each level and usually locate a Teensies who can give you an extra health but if you die within the level you return back outside the room although you are able to try again.

There’s a Levels which is basically like a race. Rayman has to get to the end of the level before the countdown shoots away the three Teensies you have to collect in them particular levels and there is also a level which allows you to unlock and play different characters.

My most favourite levels to play are the music levels simply because they have the most catchy music and the levels are bright and the most colorful levels in Rayman legends. The music levels in legends are very different to the levels in the original because in Rayman legends the level is fast paced and there is a lot more obstacles to try and dodge.
Also the music within these levels is much more popular such as the eye of the tiger.
After the level have been completed Rayman will still have a little celebration before he leaves the level for example in the first Rayman he did a celebration wave however in the Rayman legends the celebration has got a bit more than just a simple wave although you still seeing all the Teensies and Lums you collected just like in Rayman one where you got to see the Electoons you collected. Also once the level has finished s there is a screen where all his Lums, Electoons and Teensies are being counted to see which award is deserved from that for example gold, silver or bronze trophies.

After the round Rayman is 'spat' back outside onto the hall way with the trophies above the level hes just completed, ready for him to pick the next level.

Survey
The design to the levels/game is very different when you compare the original Rayman and the Rayman legendary. I personally thought that even though Rayman legendary has better qualities and a lot more interactive features for example having to turn wheels to get past spikes or having to get Globox to tickle enemies to distract them. However i thought that the original Rayman did have a bit more fun and happiness to the game.

 I decided to do a survey to see what other people thought of the design levels. I did this by putting in a level from the original Rayman and a level from the Rayman legendary, I then asked them to rank which one they preferred the most and asked why. Here are my responses;

I had 6 responses from my survey. Some of the responses ranked the legendary level design first simply because it seemed like it had more detail, looks more adventures and has a higher bit rate/Better graphics. I do agree with this feedback because legendary has a lot more action than the original Rayman and requires a lot more skill and attention than Rayman 1995.

The other responses had the same thought I did about the lack of colour in the Rayman legendary.
Rayman legendary colours are a lot more dark and dull and some of the feedback of my survey did agree. They explained how they decided to rank Rayman original level first because it was a lot more bright, colourful and more attractive than the Rayman legendry’s.

Overall the best ranked level design was Rayman legends. This is because most of the respondent’s explained how Rayman 1995 didn’t look as adventures or violent than the Rayman legendary did.

When i was looking through each of the individual responses I noticed how males ranked the Rayman legendary first because of the adventure but females preferred Rayman originals because of how bright and colourful the Rayman legendary is. However when it came to comparing the look off the cases from Rayman originals and Rayman legendary most agreed that the Rayman legends case was the best Because it looks more busy and violent even though two of the respondents disagreed and thought that it looked too aggressive and not enough colour.

I realized how most of the audience who did my survey was male and age 14- 17. Although I did have a few females participate, One being aged 25-34 and she was more into the ray man originals because she preferred old classic game. While the males aged 14-17 preferred ray man legends because of how adventures and more modern the game looks.

Here are all of the questions and the results I collected;

So overall even though Rayman levels are a lot more gloomy and have more of a terrifying/Adventures such as having dungeons, spikes, dragons, monsters dark forest and having levels which are dark blue and greens. The survey results suggest that the audience does prefer this look of design in ray man. However the Rayman origins was created to have more of an warm, silly feeling so the target audience would be a lot more wider for example the game isn't too violent or to difficult which helps attract an younger age of the audience.

Ray man 2013
Ray man 1995

movement and Objects
Rayman can still do the basic moves he could do in the first Rayman however the grimance and most of the power ups aren’t involved in Rayman legends.

In the first Rayman you had to have a power to gain an extra life or fly. While in the Rayman legendary you can already punch but to do a more powerful punch there will be a wizard to give Rayman this power when it is needed. However Rayman can do a punch down and spin hit while he is walking. Rayman can also run without having to have a special power and he can also run up and bounce of the walls.

To fly Rayman has to wait until there’s some wind in a level, this will support Rayman and allow him to fly however in Rayman legends he can already do double jumps which gives him the ability to jump far easily.

You can find extra lives in a bottle. These are usually based around levels but can be earned when saving a Teensies from a secret level/dungeon.

There is also a lot more objects in the levels than there was in the first Rayman. I think this is because the first Rayman wanted most of the detail in the backgrounds while Rayman legends backgrounds can be quite dull so each level has a lot of objects for detail. The main objects include having swinging cords, falling spikes and so much more.

Health and Points mechanic

The point score is located on the top right hand of the screen bellow the icon of Rayman and next to the Lums icon. Lums are basically the points in the game. The more Lums you collect the higher the number next to the icon will be. For example in the image bellow the number is '285' that means Rayman has collected 285 Lums which will be counted at the end of the level. The higher the Lums the better chance you have of getting a gold trophy. However collecting Teensies also affect your score but you can only see all your Teensies when you save a Teensies or at the end of the level when Rayman has a little celebration.

Rayman doesn’t have health or lives like the first Rayman game had. In Rayman legends if Rayman his hit etc. he doesn’t lose any health he just dies although instead of going to the begging of the round like it would do in the original Rayman. He just spawns at the closest check point.

However throughout the levels you can collect hearts, this is basically another life. The heart will stick to Rayman until he is injured which then the heart will disappear and Rayman will not die. This heart is usually found in flying bottles or can be a reward from saving a Teensies.

Characters/enemy's

There are so many different characters in ray man legends.
In the first rayman the characters include raymans friends and enemys etc but in rayman legends it allows you to play different characters not just rayman.

To unlock these characters you have to progress in the game and complete challenge levels.
I think having so many characters will allow the player to give the game some personalization for example they get to play the player they most prefer. Also you can unlock 'costumes' for Rayman.

I have played several characters on Rayman legends and I’ve realised that not only are the look of each character different but so is there stamina for example some players can run faster or jump further while others might not be able to jump as far although there isn’t a major difference between them all. For example I’ve noticed how the Globox isn’t that good at jumping but Barbara is amazing at running however I prefer playing with the classic Rayman.

         Barbara & Globox

In Rayman 1995 you had to collect little blue characters and small purple characters called Electoons. However in Rayman legends you have to try and collect 10 Teenies, 2 of them being king and queen. So instead of having to free Electoons you have to collect Teenies.

Lums are small golden almost balls which replace the small blue characters in 1995. The Lums are basically points and all get counted up at the end of the level. Depending on the amount of Lums you will get a trophy.  The Teenies and the Lums as well as Rayman and his friend were all sent away by the grannies because of how noisy and destructive they are although they don’t mean to be loud and just want to be friendly. Rayman has made it his goal to help save all of his friends, Teenies and collect as much Lums as possible.

Teenies & Lums

The enemy’s in Rayman have become a lot more threatening and difficult since the first Rayman came out in 1995. For example a boss in Rayman is usually a big dragon which can shoot fire or laser’s etc. Plus the regular enemy’s in levels varies for instance one enemy might be gullible and just chase after Rayman while other enemies can through objects or have shields.

The sound in Rayman is basic but yet it is still catchy and quite quirky especially the soundtrack 'title' because as soon as Rayman starts to play this song automatically plays. Making catchy songs always makes me think of Rayman and makes me eager to play it. The sound track 'dream forest' starts off quite with beetle noises this makes me feel calm and think of a Forrest which helps set the setting because obviously this world is based around a Forrest. After the beetles the song becomes more funky and fun although the song is kind of repetitive it is still quite calming but still gives a bubbly, happy sort of feeling.  Half way through the dream Forrest track the funky music sort of sound goes more quite, making it easier to hear beetles as well as little charming/sprinkle noises this makes the sound feels  more exotic and calming. This makes me feel like the dream forest world isn't dangerous and based the music to make the player feel like they are in a warm and peace full jungle. However at 4:40 the music becomes more intense and faster than it was when the world first stated this makes me feel like Rayman has met up with the more dangerous side of the dream forest and is competing with an enemy/boss.
At 5:53 the sound is more upbeat and more 'rock' it has a catchy base and you can hear several instruments such as drums and guitar. This soundtrack is a lot more interesting than the dream forest and gives an almost opposite effect for feeling. Dream Forrest made you feel calm while this music makes you feel like the game is going to be more challenging and more of a faster pace.
8:25 is the band land soundtrack. This music begins with a clarinet playing and slowly more and more instruments are introduced although it doesn't sound busy and doesn't give an upbeat sound like I expected it to do. This sound track gives a peaceful effect to the world especially at 9:30 when you can hear charm and insect noises just like you did in the dream forest sound track. This makes me feel like the first ray-man is based more outside and in nature other than just in a building.
13:41 soundtrack is from the world Mr. Sax. The sound track does relate to the title because the music is more jazz and funky. It reminds me of old school music and gives an existing defiantly at 14:45 when the music is based around drums in a catchy rhythm this makes me feel like the level is getting more tense and dangerous.

The medieval theme which starts at 3:00 on the video above begins with an upbeat song; the song is drums which are playing in a repetitive way. After a few minutes a more upbeat instrument such as the clarinet is introduced and it gives the song more of catchy effect, it introduces more instruments which make
Is it a lot more interesting at 3:40 because there is a sound effect which almost sounds like there are people chanting and cheering for Rayman. This gives it a more medieval/old feeling effect because it reminds me of villagers and the music reminds me of someone playing an instrument in a middle of a village while the villagers chant him on.
The song begins to get louder but then suddenly goes more quite again. I like that the volume doesn’t stay on a certain volume because it gives the song a lot more dimension specially with all the different sound affects you get in this song for example people singing and an almost old classic band playing. It gives the level a feeling of an old but yet warm feeling because the song can easily be identified as a pretty old song but with the people chanting it gives a warm social effect that it basically makes you feel like you’re in a medieval village.

At19:48 is the sound track for Lost in the Clouds. This song is basically the opposite than the medieval theme which I have explained above. These songs are different because the medieval them has different instruments with an upbeat rhythm. While this sound effect has an almost classic sort of effect. This song sounds like violins are playing and giving it a soft, high pitch sort of musical. This song makes me feel like it’s a heaven song for example this song is just so soft and almost dream like it makes me think of heaven and angels giving calm and 'sleeping' effect to the song.

Trip to the Jungle is played at 21:55. It involves a lot of drums which are doing a rhythm which remind me of soldiers marching along however it also has another sound effect which makes the song seem mysterious and tense. It gives me a feeling that Rayman is walking into danger especially with the high pitch sound which you can hear mostly at 22:15. This sound gives it a more tensed effect; it makes me feel like something is creeping up behind Rayman. However at 23:09 the high pitch sound becomes shorter and put into more of a fun rhythm affect making the sound more fun although it could also mean that the level is getting faster paced or there is danger around.

Hells gate at 1:18:37 is one of my most favorite sound tracks. This is because the sound starts of almost instantly in a fast beat way. This makes the song seem a lot more interesting because you get to hear all the different instruments and the pitch of the instruments. Especially at 1:18:55 because there is a change in the song pitch dramatically, this song makes me think of a dark, scary level because of how deep and fast paced it is. This song is over dramatic but I prefer it like this because I think that it makes you want to get more involved and make you want to be a lot faster. It motivates you to get more involved because it feels more tensed than a soft song which makes you feel like you can fall asleep and still be alive on the game. However this song sounds a lot more dangerous and you have to keep up with everything.

Market research
Overall rayman legends had been sold over 25 million units by the year 2014 this is because rayman legends has several different levels and is similar to the original rayman but with more vivid colours and a more unique design. Although rayman original in 1995 sold 900,000 copies with in two years It is also the best PlayStation game of all time in the United Kingdom, with around 5 million copies sold, beating Tomb Raider II and Gran Turismo in the country.  However this means that rayman legends sold over 24 million than ray man 1995 did within the first week from international sales although the main software which had the most copies was the wii U even though the game failed to meet the sales expectations until November 2013 when ray man was approaching the one million units and by November 2014 the game was still selling.
